Should there be a debate between prime ministerial candidates?

Come elections and tongues begin to waggle. Responses ranging from tongue-in-cheek to mouth-in-foot and from slip-of-the-tongue to overdrive, begin flying to rake in the poll moolah. The ongoing war of words between Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani, has assumed acerbic proportions. Advani did not know that he has whipped up a novel cause, as far as television debate on Indian elections is concerned, while inviting Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh for a television debate.

Though debates on television could be a new phenomenon in Indian elections as we are used to some on-the-field fireworks. However, in the US such debates form inseparable part of elections there. In US, candidates try to score over opponents sifting through the charter of allegations and propositions put by their opponents as well as the hawk-eyed media. Common electorates too keep a keen eye on these debates which have the capacity to influence public psyche in general. However, the ground realities in India are far different than that of the US. In our country where mosaic of society is vivid and multitudinous, would television debates cut across the masses.

The pros and cons of a probable debate on television have to be well understood before proposing them. Television debates could be an intricate issue with many issues like regulation and alike intertwined into it. Whatever, healthy and informed debates that offer common voter a glimpse into the affairs of political parties and their bosses, are always welcome.

Surely, there should be a debate between Prime Ministerial candidates and it should be telecasted on all TV channels.

We can’t expect healthy democracy without discussion. But this debate should be based on policies and programs of parties to which the Prime Ministerial candidates belong to and not on the personal qualifications of candidates.

Unfortunate thing is that LK Advani wants to have live debate on the question whether Dr. Manmohan Singh is the weakest Prime Minister.

Yes! what is the harm! let them discuss their political agendas. this will help ppl know about the manifestos that the two biggest political parties are with. It should start in a similar fashion as that of US. this is good for the democracy and ppl will be able to decide as to which party agenda is good and who should they vote for!

I think this debate will yield nothing. Except communalism/secularism everything will be same.
There can be hot debate on two issues.
1 Should PM be a member of Lok Sabha compulsorily?
2 Is Manmohan Singh the weakest PM?
I am sure Advani ji will be quite comfortable with such issues.

A debate with prime ministerial candidates is not a debate but a contest of who can fool the mostly weak minds of the country and after the fooling is done, than the true evil of the candidate comes out
The first rules of the politicians are how stupid are the masses and what level of lies and how wide should our smile be

You are quite harsh in your comment but this also sounds like a voice of reason.

I think India is the only country facing such problems.
Similar is the situation in Canada.
